Surprise Proposal Photography on the White Cliffs of Dover

We’re flying in from the States to the UK and will be in Dover for a day, could you help me plan my proposal and be our photographer? It’s a secret!

J wanted to surprise his girlfriend, J, by proposing on the White Cliffs of Dover, the closest point to France in the UK, as both of them had British and French heritage. They flew to Europe from the United States for a holiday and in the meantime I’ve scouted possible locations along the coast to choose the perfect spot for him to pop the question.

The plan was for me to team up with a local musician and videographer to make the moment extra special. As the area is quite open, even with a telephoto lens, it would have looked quite suspicious for me to be there. Or so I thought – turns out quite a few wildlife photographers love the area as there are nesting falcons on the cliffs! But I wanted it to go without a hitch. Together with Matt Ashbee, a talented local videographer, and Tom Dawson, an up-and-coming musician and songwriter, we pretended to film a music video near the spot.

The couple was standing on the edge of the cliff, and when J pointed out France, it was show time. As agreed, Tom began playing Wagon Wheel by Old Crow Medicine Show as J went down on one knee. J, his partner, was completely caught by surprise!

Once the most exciting part was over and we all met each other, Tom gave a private performance to the happy couple as Matt filmed some footage with his drone!

Afterwards, we continued with an engagement photoshoot and it was epic! Emotions were through the roof and I think the photos turned out to be incredibly romantic. Congratulations, J & J!
